Our Missions

I. Oratory

The preamble to 1860 Constitution of the Society eloquently describes the goals of our organization:

Oratory has, in every age, exerted an influence on the political, social, and moral conditions of Nations. As governments have changed from despotic to republican, and as man has advanced in culture and civilization, this influence has become more important, until, in our age and country, its sway is almost omnipotent. Sensible, then, of the power which oratory possesses for good or evil, we have formed this association for the purpose of improving in this art, and we have called it the Washington Society, that its name, recalling the deeds of the “Illustrious Father of American Liberty,” may animate us with the desire of using the power here attained, for the good of our country, and the weal of our countrymen.

The Washington Society has been, and always will be, committed to upholding these goals and to fostering the exchange of ideas through oratory. The Wash strives to maintain an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts through either debate or literary presentations.

II. Equity & Diversity

The Washington Society is dedicated to promoting diversity and equity both within the Society and on the Grounds of the University. Our commitment to inclusion across race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, identity, and experience is what truly makes The Wash what it is today: a community of unique individuals who come together every Thursday evening regardless of their differences in order to appreciate great literature, comedy, and debate.

The Washington Society has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment, assault, hate speech, and other malicious actions of any kind. We understand that reporting behavior that threatens the safety of our members can be incredibly difficult. One of the mechanisms in place to protect the rights of our members is the Equity Box.

The Equity Box is a form for reporting offensive behavior. Only the President has access to submissions.

III. Philanthropy

Every year, The Wash's Board of Trustees comes together to agree upon a philanthropic project that promotes the art of oratory while benefiting the broader UVA and Charlottesville community
